The MCWP team, convened by Cenen Bagon, co-founder of the Vancouver Committee for Domestic Workers’ and Caregivers’ Rights (CDWCR), investigates Canada’s changing migrant care worker programs, including the implementation of the Home Child Care Provider and Home Support Worker Pilots by IRCC in 2019. As the 5-year term of these pilot programs ends in June 2024, this project aims to influence positive changes for care workers including amplifying the long-standing call for status for all.

Researchers from the MCWP team will first share findings from interviews with migrant care workers and quantitative research conducted through IRCC FOIPPA requests. We will then move into a dialogue that aims to learn from community members’ knowledge, experience, and questions related to changes that may occur as the current care worker pilots come to an end. Finally, we will ask attendees to help shape recommendations to improve the working conditions and lives of current and future migrant care workers. We welcome and encourage the expertise of those working on issues of labour rights, migrant justice, and adjacent areas of addressing precarity.

The event will also include a speaker from CDWCR who will testify to the lived experiences of migrant workers who come to Canada through these programs as well as activities/actions to mobilize our community in support of migrant care workers.

We hope you join us for this critical dialogue around the rights and struggles of migrant care workers. Please share this invitation with your networks!
